Overview

The Kentucky Board of Dentistry is a semi-autonomous agency within state government. Its mission is to protect the public by regulating the practice of dentistry through the administration of the Dental Practice Act. This primarily involves licensing oral health professionals to ensure they are qualified to treat patients. Dentists and dental hygienists must complete a rigorous program of education, training, and testing before being issued a license. Currently, about 6,000 practitioners hold an active license to practice in Kentucky. Other duties performed by the Board include issuing sedation permits, registering dental labs, and investigating complaints against licensees.

Most members of the Board are appointed by the governor to four-year terms and are assisted by a professional staff who help enforce the rules regarding the practice of dentistry. As an agency of the Commonwealth, the Board is a separate and distinct entity from any professional dental association or nonprofit. It is not a membership organization and does not lobby on behalf of the dental profession - it exists solely to protect and serve the public interest. The Board is also self-supporting and receives no outside government appropriations. It is fully funded through fees assessed for the licensure of dental professionals.
